Harrison has wet the bed every night since birth. He was 6 weeks premature but has had no medical problems associated with his early arrival. I've been told the dr's can't help until he is 7 - should i take him back to the dr's for further testing? He has had trouble during the day and even now if he needs to go he needs to go now and is unable to hang on for very long - often resulting in a small leak of urine on his undies. He has been using dry nites for almost 18mths but sometimes still leaks outside of these. Weekends we go without but school nights we use dry nites to save showering etc in the morning. I am sure he will grow out of it but am also concerned he may have a medical problem. Any thoughts?
I generally recommend that if children experience frequent accidents during the day after age 5 or they start wetting the bed again after a period of dryness it is important that you have a GP check them out. Even though you took him to your doctor when he was younger it would not hurt for him to get checked out again, I’m all for listening to mother’s instincts (I feed off my own all the time), even if you are wrong and get the all clear it will make you feel less concerned about the situation. About 10% of children continue to wet the bed by age 7 years – about 15% of these will achieve nighttime continence (each year) without the need for treatment. If you are happy to wait it out until he outgrows the bedwetting on his own this is fine although he has reached an age where treatment is available. You could perhaps discuss your options with your GP when you are there having him tested. In the meantime make sure he is fully emptying his bladder before he goes to sleep at night, make sure he is not drinking too much before he goes to bed – most of his fluid should be consumed between breakfast and 5pm. Some foods and drinks can exacerbate bedwetting so it is wise to avoid things like dairy products in the evening, chocolate, fizzy drinks and artificial colourings. All the best!
