My son wets the bed every night. What is available to help him?

My son wets the bed every night sometimes twice a night. I have trouble understanding why he does even though i know my husband wet the bed for many years also. My 3 year old daughter does not wet the bed, what is available to help him stop wetting the bed.

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Children wet the bed for a number of reasons – some do so because they are unable to wake in response to a full bladder, others do so because their bodies produce more urine than they can hold in their bladder overnight. One of the strongest predictors of whether a child will wet their be at night is family history – if one parent wet the bed as a child then you have a 44% chance your children will also wet at night – which explains why your son does and your daughter doesn’t. It is really just a matter of chance – which is how you should put it to him if he asks why he wets the bed but his younger sister doesn’t. Time is the best solution when it comes to managing bedwetting – he is most likely to stop wetting around the same age your husband achieved nighttime continence. Depending on how old he was you may be happy to just wait it out or you may want to look into different treatment – most of these are listed on the DryNites website. The conditioning alarm is probably your best option, keeping in mind that most doctors do not recommend treatment under the age of 6 years due to the high spontaneous cure rate up until then.
