Hi S. B. – while you are correct in saying it is perfectly normal for a child your sons age to be still wetting at night if you are at all concerned about the frequency of his wetting or the apparent increase in volume then it is certainly worthwhile following this up with your GP. It might be helpful to think about what is happening on the nights where he wets more than others. Is he drinking or eating foods high in sugar or caffeine? – This can stimulate the kidneys into producing more urine than normal. Is he overtired? – This will make it more difficult for him to wake in response to a full bladder. It is not unusual for children to not wet when attending sleepovers; this is most likely due to the fact that he sleeps less soundly and is more aware of a full bladder. You can encourage healthy bladder habits by making sure he drinks water regularly throughout the day (every couple of hours), adopts a diet that includes lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and avoids ‘just in case’ trips to the toilet as we are wanting to help increase his bladder capacity as much as possible. It is important to try and develop a consistent routine across both households – this will also be important if the doctor recommends any form of treatment. All the best!

Dr Cathrine
