My son by the start of school this year had been toilet trained. He no longer wet his bed and only rarely had pooh accidents. He suffers from constipation and gets overflow. The first term he didnt have a single accident of either type at school. This 2nd term a couple of weeks in he started wetting his bed again and having wee accidents again. He actually had a poo accident last week of term. The last two nights he has woken up and gone to the toilet and has been dry. is this normal will he take two steps forward 1 back?? How long does this take? He will be 8 in april and am worried of teasing at school?
it is very common to fluctuate between wet and dry nights as children move toward nighttime continence – thankfully as time goes on the periods when he is dry will get longer and longer until his bedwetting is so infrequent that it comes to an end. The length of time it takes to achieve nighttime continence varies from one child to the next – it will require lots of support and most of all patience. You can help him by making sure he doesn’t become overtired – sometimes just an extra 30 minutes a night can make all the difference between waking up dry or waking up wet. Avoid constipation by making sure he is drinking plenty of water, eating a high fibre diet and having regular bowel movements. Avoid food or drink that contains caffeine as this will increase the amount of urine his kidneys produce overnight putting additional strain on his bladder. If the constipation continues it is important that you speak with your GP, as this will only exacerbate his bedwetting.
