5 year old boy wetting bed even with dry nites

he still has 'accidents' during the day about once a week to once a fortnight. i get him to go to the toilet before bed but he often doesn't urinate before bed, he just stands there and then says he doesn't need to go. he urinates so much at night that two out of the last four nights his sheets have gotten saturated even tho he is wearing dry nites.

Dear Brooke, while it is not unusual for 5-year-olds to experience the occasional daytime accident it is probably worth having your son assessed just to check whether his day and nighttime wetting is the result of a small bladder capacity. You can try and reduce how much he wets at night by reducing the amount he drinks just before bedtime – it is not unusual for children to drink very little throughout the day then consume the majority of their daily intake in the evening. You can help increase his bladder capacity by encouraging him to drink water regularly throughout the day – about 1 to 1.5 litres at his age. While reward systems are not appropriate in the treatment of bedwetting you can use rewards to help encourage good behaviour, like making sure he goes to the toilet just before bedtime. Younger children tend to experience accidents during the day, as they are often reluctant to stop whatever acitivity they are engaged in to go to the toilet or completely ignore the signs that they need to urinate. Remind him that whatever he is doing will still be there when he gets back – and wet pants will only remove him from the situation for longer than had he gone to the toilet in the first place. All the best!

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
