My 4 year old wets through his Drynites twice a night? We change him, he goes to the toliet and by the morning he is soaked again?

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi Carina, this must be incredibly frustrating. Children’s nighttime urine output is quite variable. A small number of children who wet the bed do so because they do not produce enough of the anti-diuretic hormone ADH. If nighttime ADH levels are low, children produce the same amount of urine at night as throughout the day. If this is the cause, children will continue to wet the bed at night until their body begins to produce more of this hormone. Adequate daily fluid intake is important in the management of children’s bedwetting, between 1 to 1.5 litres of fluid per day is generally recommended. Encourage him to use the toilet at regular intervals throughout the day (approximately 4-5 times) and again just before bedtime. Include a diet high in fruit and vegetables and avoid drinks high in sugar or caffeine as these are known to stimulate the kidneys. Take him to the toilet just before bedtime, making sure he fully empties his bladder. If you were at all concerned about the amount of urine he is producing I would certainly recommend you consult with your GP.

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
