My 6yo is disheartened when his younger siblings have dry nappies which is quite often. Please do not say that he will grow out of it as it is affecting his self esteem.

My son Chaney is six years old he has two younger siblings one of which he shares a room with and Clay very rarely has a wet night but he wears nappies so Chaney does not feel to abnormal or different, although he does get very disheartened when Clay(3)and Tori(2)have dry nights which is quite often. I have taken my kids off colours and preservatives and limit Chaneys water at night but this does not seem to matter, he is a very heavy sleeper and will even wet the bed if he has a sleep during the day. I know this is effecting his self esteem, the only thing I havent tried is taking him off milk, please do not say that he will grow out of it as it is affecting his self esteem.

Boys bedwetting (4-10 y) · Asked by Sam over 3 years ago

Dr Cathrine Answered:

If your child’s bedwetting starts to impact on their self-confidence or self-esteem then it is time to think about treatment – regardless of how old they are! I can only imagine how disheartening it must be for him when both his younger siblings wake-up dry. Firstly, it is important to reassure him that his bedwetting is not his fault – some children’s bodies just do things a little better than other’s – you could perhaps point out to him something that he does particularly well that other children he knows may not. How we handle children’s bedwetting is crucial to how it impacts on their emotional wellbeing. While there are a number of known causes of bedwetting we still do not fully understand what makes one child wet the bed and another wake-up dry – which is why not all treatments work for all children. The best thing for you to do is schedule an appointment with your GP – he/she will need to first run some tests to rule out anything medical – then you should discuss different treatments. If your doctor is not particularly familiar with bedwetting treatments ask to be referred to someone who is. It is important that you make clear your motivation for wanting to start treatment – that is, the negative impact this is having on his self-esteem.
