Ten year old son has been through the alarm process but the results aren't long term

My son is 9years and 10mths old, 2 years ago we underwent the bell and pad alarm system program to help prevent bedwetting. During the program he did not hear the alarm and I would have to physically wake him up. He was however dry after 3 weeks and remained that way for a year. He then relapsed and we redid the alarm program for 2 weeks. After another period (6mths) of complete dryness he is now wetting again (on average 3 or 4 nights a week). What can I do to help him become dry again. The bell and pad alarm system doesn't seem to be affect long term.? Thankyou for your help.

Dr Cathrine Answered:

While the recurrence of bedwetting when using the conditioning alarm is much lower than when using other treatments, it is not unusual for children to experience one or two relapses. These may be unexplained or may occur at times of stress or in reaction to changes in children’s immediate environment. In general the time it takes for children to stop wetting is faster with each treatment. Many children take up to 6 months to achieve dryness so the fact that this occurred in as little as 3 weeks the first time and just 2 weeks the second time is very encouraging. In saying this, in about one quarter of cases the alarm treatment is not as effective and may be more successful if used in combination with other treatments. Some parents have reported successful outcomes when combining the conditioning alarm with prescribed medication or more experimental approaches such as hypnotherapy, chiropractic manipulation or naturopathy. You should discuss these with your GP or continence advisor before commencing any form of treatment.
