6yo still bed wetting- should we try an alarm? My doctor said they didn't recommend trying anything till after 7 years but not sure why

I have a boy aged 6 years 4 months who daytime toilet trained easily around 2years 9months but still wets the bed almost every night.he seems a very deep sleeper and just doesn't wake up to go. We have not tried anything other than not giving too much to drink before bed. He seems otherwise healthy, we just use a DryNite and don't make a big deal out of it, except to give positive comments if he's dry in the morning. There is no strong family history of bedwetting (one of my brothers wet till around 5 then stopped)Do you think we should try an alarm as he would like to be dry? My doctor said they didn't recommend trying anything till after 7 years but not sure why. your comments and advice would be appreciated.

Boys bedwetting (4-10 y) · Asked by Vanessa over 3 years ago

Dr Cathrine Answered:

doctors typically recommend holding off on treatment until children turn 7 years of age due to the high spontaneous cure rate up until then. Also treatment success depends on children’s commitment and desire to become dry – which generally doesn’t happen until they are a bit older particularly when it comes to boys. The most effective treatments currently available are conditioning alarms – with about 75% of children achieving dryness. You need to be prepared for some broken nights sleep, as you will initially have to get up to the alarm and wake your son, particularly if he is a deep sleeper. A successful outcome depends largely on the level of support and training provided so it is important that you consult with an experienced professional first. In the meantime continue with the encouragement and positive attitude, this has been found to be the most important factor in shaping children’s response to bedwetting.
