Both my son's are bed wetters, one is 7 and the other is 9. My 9yr old has type 1 diabetes which is well controlled and I was wondering if his diabetes had anything to do with his bed wetting? Hope you can help.
Juvenile diabetes is one of the more common medical causes of secondary enuresis – this is when children have experienced a significant period of dryness (at least 6 months) then return to wetting. Once the diabetes is under control children typically stop wetting the bed. Due to the strong genetic link t is not unusual for a number of children in the same family to experience bedwetting, with about 8 in 10 children experiencing nighttime incontinence if both parents wet the bed as children, reducing to 4 in10 if only one parent wet the bed. If genetically determined – most children will show a spontaneous resolution around the same age that their parent achieved continence. If you would prefer not to wait it out there are a number of effective treatments available including conditioning alarms, which currently have the highest success rates – you should discuss the suitability of these with your doctor.
