not sure if you'll be able to tell us anything new as we've tried just about everything ie programmes, alarms, tablets even blackmail!!! Ben is almost 8yrs old now and his nite bed wetting appears to be getting worse. He was toilet trained from around 3yrs of age, then around 4yrs he started
intermittently bed-wetting.This upsets both him and us as parents. Is there anything else we can possibly do for him?
I completely understand your frustration. The tricky thing about bedwetting is that there are so many possible causes that it can be difficult to treat. I am assuming that you have already met with a continence specialist – this is important as the success of interventions like the conditioning alarm increase when used under the guidance of a professional. There are a few things worth thinking about – firstly, when you used the alarm did he experience a period of dryness then returned to wetting – if so, I would recommend reintroducing the alarm as it is not unusual for children to experience a relapse, with about 1 in 10 children needing additional treatment. If you are open to alternative treatments – it sounds like you would give anything a go at the moment – some families have combined the alarm with hypnotherapy and have found it to be more successful than when using the alarm on it’s own. Chiropractic manipulation has also met with some limited success. Before trying any form of intervention it is important that you discuss this with your doctor first. As he is getting older it is very important that you do not allow his bedwetting to impact on his self-esteem or restrict his social life. While it is tempting to offer rewards – this may result in him feeling even worse about himself when he is unable to achieve the goals you have set. By all means use incentives for behaviour he has direct control over like disposing of his DryNites in the morning, putting his wet clothes in the tub to soak or helping you to make his bed.
