Wetting through pull ups/ drynites

My 7 year old son has always wet the bed. Nearly every night. He has gone for about 5 days in a row not wetting last year, but started again on the sixth night. He used to occasionally wet through the pull up, but now he is wetting through the pull up nearly every night for the last few weeks. He wakes up, doesn't even realise he is wet and comes into my bed. I check, change and put him back to bed. He never wets through twice, but why is he wetting through them in the first place? HELP.

Hi Rebecca – there are a number of possible reasons why your son is wetting through. It is not unusual for children to experience some leakage when wearing Pull-Ups at night – as these are designed for day use and are much less absorbent than DryNites. If he continues to wet through when wearing DryNites the first thing to check is that they are the right size as an improper fit (either too small or too big) can contribute toward leakage. It is also worth looking at what he is eating and drinking in the afternoon and evenings. There are certain foods that can increase the amount of urine children produce overnight. It is best to avoid anything containing caffeine (this includes cola drinks as well as chocolate), and limit his intake of dairy and citrus. You can also try and minimize the amount of urine he produces overnight by ensuring he fully empties his bladder before he goes to bed. If you have not done so already it may be worthwhile making an appointment with your GP so that they can assess your son’s bladder capacity. This is usually achieved by having your son drink, and then measuring his urine output when he says he needs to go to the toilet.

Dr Cathrine
