I attended a talk on Enuerisis at the local Health Clinic last night and have walked away more confused than I could ever imagine. I thought there would be a simple solution. Obviously her waitlist is extensive (5mths) and I really want to get to the bottom of this. My son is in no way bothered by this and quite proudly tells his friends he still wears pull-ups to bed. He drinks well, toilets frequently and has no bladder problems during the day. I'm thinking we might hire an alarm system to try to see if this helps him firstly but if this doesn't work, do you think at his age, we should be speaking to a GP about it? Thank you for your help. Linda
Hi Linda – you are certainly not alone when it comes to feeling overwhelmed! The tricky thing when it comes to bedwetting is that there are a number of underlying causes, and of course different causes call for different solutions. Even more confusing is the fact that some children are able to outgrow bedwetting on their own while others need some form of intervention in order to achieve nighttime continence! It really is up to the parent and the child about when and if to deal with children’s bedwetting. Given your son is not particularly concerned about his bedwetting and you are able to manage this and minimize any stress by using absorbent pants – I would probably hold off on starting any form of treatment. The problem with introducing the alarm too early is that its success is highly dependent on how motivated and committed children are to the program. This form of treatment requires considerable effort on behalf of the child and parent, and frankly many 6-year-olds are not that motivated to become dry. I wouldn’t be concerned with his attitude; this is perfectly normal, particularly when it comes to boys, and a testament to how encouraging and supportive you must be. It is certainly worthwhile making an appointment to see your GP as they will be able to run some tests, which can shed some light on his bladder capacity as well as rule out any underlying medical cause. All the best!
Regards,
Dr Cathrine
