While it can be incredibly frustrating, it is often helpful to know that children who wet the bed rarely do it on purpose. Some children wet the bed because they are unable to recognize messages that their bladder sends to their brain telling them to wake-up and go to the toilet. Others may have a small bladder capacity and are unable to hold the urine until morning when they wake. Genetics plays a major role with bedwetting running in families. The fact that your son does not wet the bed every night is a very good indicator that he is moving toward achieving nighttime continence, until then it is important that you provide him with lots of support and encouragement and most importantly assure him that you know that this is not his fault. If he continues to wet the bed over the next year or his wetting increases in frequency I would recommend that you take him to see your GP just to rule out any possible underlying medical cause.
