Our 8 year old boy has started bed wetting 12 months ago. He previously was dry for 2 years. His parents are divorced, they were separated before he was born, and he lives with his dad. They had moved away from his mother when he was 5 and he stayed dry. They moved again at age 7 and that is when he started bedwetting again. His mother also started seeing another man, but as far as we know he likes him. Couple months after bedwetting started his step-mother had another child. We also believe he may have adhd.

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi T.J. – your son has certainly experienced a number of significant changes over a very short period. It is not unusual for children to experience a return to bedwetting at times of stress. Moving house, parental divorce or a change in the home situation such as the birth of a sibling can all result in children feeling overly anxious and stressed. The fact that your son has experienced all of these things over the past year certainly places him at risk. When it comes to managing secondary bedwetting time is often the best cure, although in some instances more formal intervention is needed. Your son may benefit from speaking with a clinical child psychologist, ideally one who has an understanding of children’s nighttime incontinence. There is also a slightly higher incidence of bedwetting among children diagnosed with ADHD, so this may also be contributing factor. While rare, there are a number of possible medical causes of SNE so it is always wise to have children checked by their GP. In the meantime provide him with lots of love and affection. Reinforce that this is in no way his fault and that this is something that you will manage together.

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
