Seven year old son wets the bed, we've visited the hospital and tried the alarms. What next?

My son is 7 and still bedwets i have taken him to Camden Hospital to the bed wetting nurse who says he will grow out of it which was 12 months ago, i have tried bed wetting alarms and he just does not wake up. He gets very embarrassed and i do not know what to do.

it can be extremely frustrating when a bedwetting treatment does not seem to work for your child. While the conditioning alarms currently have the highest success rate they unfortunately do not represent a cure for all. The alarm treatment experiences fewer successes when used without proper instruction and support from a continence advisor. You need to go into your son’s room when the alarm sounds even if he doesn’t wake-up by himself, you will need to wake him so that he can turn the alarm off himself. It is also worth keeping in mind that children typically experience one or two relapses before achieving permanent continence so sometimes it is necessary to use the alarm for about 12 months. Bedwetting can result in feelings of helplessness, lowered self-esteem and a lack of control, so it is important that you help your son feel in control of the situation while at the same time letting him know that this is something that you are going to tackle together. You can foster positive self-esteem by highlighting all those areas in his life where he experiences success. At the same time reassure him that this is much more common than he thinks and that there is probably at least one other child in his class at school who also wets the bed.
