9 year old son has seen doctors and paediatricians but he's normal. So how can we help him stop wetting the bed?

Our son has always wet the bed. He had a few dry nights at the ages of about 2 1/2. That was it. I have spoken to various doctors and paediatricians about it and they all say the same. Give him time. He is 9 and a half now is he is very concerned. He so badly wants to be trained but says he just can't wake up and dreams about going to the toilet and that's when he does it. He has had an ultrasound to check his kidneys and bladder but it came back normal. Have you got any suggestions what we could do? We also have 2 older children who were trained at the "normal" age.

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Most children who wet the bed have no underlying medical condition and many of these are able to outgrow it on their own. However if your child’s bedwetting becomes an issue for either yourself or them, then it is time to explore additional treatment options. Conditioning alarms currently have the highest success rates with about 75% of children achieving nighttime continence. The time it takes for the treatment to work can vary from individual to individual and it is common to experience one to two relapses in the first year so you will need lots of patience and understanding! Keep in mind that the success of these interventions depends on the level of commitment (by your son and your family), receiving correct instruction, as well as the level of support provided. Be prepared for some broken nights sleep as you will initially have to get up to the alarm and wake your son so that he can turn off the alarm himself and go to the toilet. It is a good idea to speak with a Continence Advisor before deciding on what type of alarm to use. In the meantime build his self-esteem by pointing out all the things he is wonderful at – it is important not to let his bedwetting dominate his life.
