Boys bedwetting (4-10 y) · Asked by C. D. over 2 years ago

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi C. D. – children develop the neurological and emotional capacity to control their bladders at different ages. By age 8, about 8-10% of children continue to wet the bed on a regular basis. While it is fine for you to reduce his fluid intake before bedtime, make sure he does not becomes dehydrated as this can cause constipation, a contributor to children’s bedwetting. Waking children is generally no longer recommended as a way to manage children’s bedwetting, it does not help them to achieve continence and can result in disrupted sleep, making it even harder for children to wake in response to a full bladder. Once children reach school-age it is a good idea to have them checked by a doctor just to rule out any underlying medical cause as well as to discuss treatment options. I do understand your concern over sleepovers and the potential ramifications of being discovered by friends however it is essential that you do not allow his bedwetting to restrict his social life as this can impact on his self-esteem. It’s often helpful to talk to parents or friends before staying overnight and prearrange a place where he can discretely change his clothes and dispose of his DryNites – you’ll be surprised how supportive people can be.

Dr Cathrine
