My son turned 3 in March his been toilet trained since just after his 2nd bday and we started him at night in Jan 2010. He can go a week of dry nights then every night for a week he'll wet his bed and then 2 nights dry and so on. Its never been a regular pattern(which I dont expect) but we just wondering where to start on helping him become dry every night. We've just started using dry nights and 2 out of 4 were dry but is it normal to have a few dry and then a few wet nights? My husband, son and myself have moved in with my parents late Jan 2010 while we build and I no that wont be helping but we just want to try and sort it out for my sons sake. Any ideas?
Hi Velika, the time it takes between achieving daytime control and nighttime continence is quite variable. Some children achieve this in a matter of weeks, others take months and for some it takes years. Unlike daytime continence nighttime wetting typically happens when children are asleep and are not in conscious control over their bladder, making it more difficult to train a child to become dry at night. The fact that your son experiences periods of dryness is a great indication that his body is developing toward a point where it can store the amount of urine he produces overnight. Keep doing what your doing. Reassure him that his bedwetting is completely normal and that with time he will become dry – the most important message for children is that this is not their fault. As adults we need to help them to understand the difference between daytime wetting and nighttime wetting – once they understand this they often feel much better about the situation. You can promote healthy bladder habits by making sure he drinks regularly throughout the day, tapering off in the evenings. Make sure your son has a regular bedtime as overtiredness can make it particularly difficult for children to wake in response to a full bladder.

Dr Cathrine
