Hi My little man is 4.5 years old and i am wondering when he will be able to stop wearing a nappy at night

he usually soaks his nappy as he drinks alot of water through the day, we have tried to limit the ammount of water, but his nappy is still quite wet. My sister has a four year old and he isn't wearing a nappy to bed anymore, how can we achieve a similar result
Thanks

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi Sarah – unfortunately unlike daytime continence the road to achieving nighttime continence is less direct, with many a speed bump! Unlike toilet training, which is conscious and deliberate, nighttime bladder control is more dependent on maturation of children’s nervous systems and bladder. The fact that the wetting occurs when children are asleep makes it that more difficult to control. As with most areas of development there is huge variation with respect to the age at which children achieve this milestone. We typically recommend that parents hold off until their child has reached 7 years of age before they consider treatment options due to the high spontaneous cure rate up until then. In the meantime its fine for him to drink water regularly throughout the day – approximately 1 litre is recommended for children his age. You should try using DryNites rather than nappies – these are better suited to older children and offer a high level of absorbency and are therefore less prone to leaking.

Dr Cathrine
