Why has my 5 year old only recently started wetting the bed?

My 5 year old has been toilet trained during the day for about 2 years and an occasional wet bed, but just lately he is having accidents during the day and has being wet during the night nearly every second night. He has just turned 5 no other emotional factors have changed.

Dr Cathrine Answered:

your son’s type of bedwetting would be considered secondary enuresis (SE) – this is less common and has different underlying causes. When children start to wet again during the day or night the first thing to do is to look for a possible medical explanation – your GP will be able to run a number of tests to see if there is a physical reason for his wetting. Another more common explanation for SE is stress – it is not unusual for children to experience a return to bedwetting when they start school – the stress of adapting to new routines and rules as well as a new social group can sometimes place additional pressure on children. Gently talk to your son to see if anything is bothering him – some young children have difficulty verbalizing their fears these can manifest themselves in physical ways like bedwetting or daytime accidents. Typically the bedwetting or daytime accidents stop when the stress goes away.
