Thirsty 3.5 year old has bottle before and during sleep time, could that affect him bedwetting?

Our Son who is almost 3.5 and very active wakes up around 3 in the morning and tells me he is really thirsty. He still has a bottle of soy milk and night and usually one in the morning when he wakes , he occasionally wakes up with a wet pull up. Should we stop the evening go to sleep bottle of soy ? not sure why he wakes up ?

Dr Cathrine Answered:

you would find most 3-year-old boys still wet the bed, some doing so occasionally like your son with others wetting almost every night. This is perfectly normal behaviour and nothing to be concerned about. In terms of nutritional requirements most children his age do not require a bottle before going to sleep you will find this is habitual and most likely serves his need for comfort – in much the same way as many toddlers still like to be breastfed to sleep or to suck a dummy. If he associates his bottle with going to sleep this explains why he asks for it when he wakes during the night – at these times instead of offering him a bottle of milk you could offer him just plain water. It is OK to offer unsweetened juice or water before going to bed although preferably in a cup. If you find he continues to wake-up thirsty every night or his bedwetting increases in frequency I would advise making and appointment with your GP.
