Im trying to teach my 2 1/2 year old to get up and go to the toilet by himself in the night.. I need some helpful hints on how to encourage him to get up and do it by himself instead of waking me up?

at the moment I put a nappy on him when he goes to sleep as he wont let me put one on him when he is still awake.. and when he wakes in the middle of the night and calls out to me, I go to put him on the toilet and the nappy is still dry..after he uses the toilet I than leave it off! I understand he is young.. but he has been toilet trained of a day for over a year now.. any advice would be helpful

Hi M.J., it doesn’t sound like your son has a problem with bedwetting given he is able to wake-up in response to a full-bladder and has a dry nappy when he wakes. Given his age, both of these things are quite an achievement! It is not unusual for young children to call out for their parents assistance throughout the night, most of my children continued to do so right up until school-age and I still get up to my 3-year-old on a regular basis! Being scared of the dark is a common fear among young children. I would hazard a guess that your son is calling out to you, as he is too frightened to get up by himself. One way you can help him is by making sure he has easy access to the toilet by leaving the toilet light on or a small nightlight in his room. Reassure him that there is nothing to be scared of and that you are nearby if he needs you. Given his nappy is always dry you could try letting him sleep without one, which will also make it easier for him to self-manage going to the toilet.

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
