5 year old son is such a deep sleeper, he doesn't wake up

My son who is 5 just seems to be in such a deep sleep during the night that he just doesn't wake up to go to the toilet. Sometimes he will have saturated the bed and doesn't realise until the morning. We tried getting him up a few hours after he has gone to bed, but he still seems to wet the bed. We have had instances where he will be dry for a couple of nights
but 9 times out of ten he will have wet the bed, therefore we put on a dry-nite each night. What can we do to help him become dry at night?

Dr Cathrine Answered:

The first thing to keep in mind is that bedwetting is quite common among 5-year-old children with about 10-15% waking up wet at least once a week or more. At this early stage the most common form of treatment is time, with many of these children outgrowing bedwetting on their own. Waking your son at night to take him to the toilet should only be done if it does not result in disrupted sleep patterns for you and him. You need to keep in mind that in most cases this approach will not teach children to wake-up on their own and go to the toilet. Your attitude and support are the most important factors in helping him manage his bedwetting – make sure he understands that this is not his fault and that it is something that happens to lots of kids. You can talk about things he can do to encourage a healthy bladder like drinking 6 glasses of water per day as well as eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Avoid sugary drinks and food colouring as this can increase urine production Make sure he fully empties his bladder each time he goes to the toilet, avoid those ‘just in case’ visits as this only teaches the bladder to empty more often. If his bedwetting continues after the age of 6 then it is time to visit your GP to discuss treatment options – most doctors will not consider treatments before then.
