7yo occasionally wets and also sleep walks. Is this related

Hi. My 7 year old son occasionally wets the bed and he also sleep walks at times. Is this related? I have tried bed wetting alarms which seemed to work but after months of being without the alarm he has reverted to bed wetting again. He also drinks heaps of water throughout the day and towards the evening. What more can I do to stop bed wetting?

Dr Cathrine Answered:

While I am unaware of any direct link between sleep walking and bedwetting both have a genetic predisposition and both typically occur when children are in a very deep sleep. A recent report published in the US suggests that some children show a reduction in both bedwetting and sleep walking following a small increase in total sleep time. By moving their bedtime ahead as little as half an hour a day children were able to sleep without disturbance. The fact that he only wets the bed once a week it is worth giving some thought to what is different about that day – if this occurs on the same night every week perhaps it follows a day where he has been highly active, has consumed more drinks than usual or is particularly overtired. In regards to the alarm treatment – it is not unusual for children to experience one or two relapses after treatment – you should reintroduce the alarm when this happens, the time it takes for him to achieve nighttime dryness should lessen with each treatment.
