Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi Kerry – divorce can be incredibly stressful for all involved, especially young children. It is not uncommon for children to experience toileting issues at times of high stress. Young children often find it difficult to verbalise how they are feeling so negative emotions will often manifest as physical symptoms such as what you are describing. During difficult times such as this it is often helpful if parents seek additional support for their children. The best thing for you to do is to speak with your GP about getting a referral for them to see a clinical child psychologist. These visits now are covered by a Medicare rebate system. You also need to look after yourself at this challenging time – take care.

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
