Hi Kelly, when bedwetting starts to impact on a child’s self-esteem then it is time to think about treatment regardless of how old they are! Firstly, it is important to reassure him that his bedwetting is not his fault – some children’s bodies just do things a little better than others – you could perhaps point out to him something that he does particularly well (and better than others!). How we handle children’s bedwetting is crucial to how it impacts on their emotional wellbeing. The best thing for you to do is schedule an appointment with your GP, he/she will need to first run some tests to rule out anything medical then you should discuss different treatments. If your doctor is not particularly familiar with bedwetting treatments ask to be referred to someone who is. Many doctors will encourage you to wait until he is older before beginning treatment so it is important that you make clear your motivation for wanting to start treatment, that is, the negative impact this is having on his self-esteem.
Regards,
Dr Cathrine
