Are DryNites 4-7 years more absorbent than Huggies Junior (16kg+) nappies?

My almost 5 year old son still comfortably fits the Huggies Junior nappies. He was wearing Pull-Ups at night, however we found they were not very absorbent and he was often wetting the bed, even if we got him up to go to the toilet. He now wears Junior nappies at night which fit him well and we're waiting to see how the bed wetting goes. I'm also keen to stop getting him up to go to the toilet, as you recommend. I am now wondering at what stage we would change to DryNites? Is there a difference in absorbency?

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi Tracey, DryNites offer similar absorbency to the Junior nappies – the decision to switch is typically motivated by children’s desire to wear something more ‘underpant like’. When children approach school-age they tend to want to distance themselves from anything that looks like something designed for babies. Size and fit of course are important; absorbent pants that are too small or too big tend to leak, defeating the purpose! It is a good idea to avoid Pull-Ups as these are designed for toilet training and daytime use therefore offering less absorbency. You can try and help develop better nighttime bladder capacity by encouraging him to fully empty his bladder just before he goes to bed, it’s also important that he adopts a regular drinking pattern throughout the day (about 1 litre of water at his age is a good measure). All the best!

Dr Cathrine
