My 8 year old son has severe hyperspadias, has had many operations to fix it and will need further operations when he reaches puberty. He is still bed wetting and MUST use a pull up at night. We have tried limiting his fluid intake, taking him to the toilet at midnight and even rewards but nothing has worked.... Any other ideas? ... Also his male cousins wet the bed until the age of 9 ! Should I just be patient? I don't mind if it only costs me a $1 a night to get a good night sleep
I am unaware of any direct link between hyperspadias and primary enuresis – this may be something worth discussing with your Urologist. Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation in the community about how we should go about treating children who wet the bed – rewards systems, limiting fluids and waking children during the night are three approaches that traditionally have had very little success. Reward systems do not work largely because children have very little control over what is happening to their body while asleep – imagine I was to offer you $500 if you were to stop snoring you couldn’t do it no matter how much you wanted the money – this is what it is like for children who wet the bed. While there is some debate over what actually causes children to wet the bed we do know for sure that there is a strong genetic link – often one of the best indicators of when children are going to outgrow the bedwetting is the age in which other family members achieved nighttime dryness. So unless the bedwetting is becoming an issue for either you or your son I would take the patience route – the chances are by this time next year his bedwetting will be but a distant memory. In the meantime keep using DryNites this will save him the embarrassment of waking up wet and you many loads of laundry – and most importantly – a good night sleep!
