We are also planning to travel overseas for 6 weeks in June, and are worried about what to do in hotels all the time. Is introducing a bedmat going to bed a problem for him? as we don't want to have to strip beds everyday to add a matress protector incase it is a night that his nappy pants can't handle the volume.
Any suggestions/advice would be great.
Hi Cherie, firstly, let me reassure you that your son’s behaviour is perfectly normal. It is quite common for children to experience daytime accidents for months sometimes years after they have been toilet trained. Some preschoolers wet their pants because they are just too busy and do not want to interrupt their play to go to the toilet. If you think this may be the case you can help him to stay dry by drawing his attention to signs that he needs to go – my son transfers his weight from one foot to the other (a bit like a dance) when he needs to use the toilet. Given the problems you are experiencing with leakage I would think about changing to DryNites now. Absorbent pants that are too small are certainly prone to leakage. With my own children I generally found that I needed to upgrade to the next size before they reached the upper weight limit listed on the pack. You can try and reduce his urine output by limiting drinks high in sugar as well as the amount of dairy or citrus he drinks in the evening as these are known to stimulate the kidneys. It is not recommended that you restrict fluids completely as this can lead to constipation, a known cause of bedwetting. If you were at all concerned about the amount of urine he is producing I would recommend you consult with your GP. If you are still unable to manage his bedwetting just be using the DryNites than I would certainly consider using a bedmat while travelling overseas.
Regards,
Dr Cathrine
