Our work in progress!!
Our son has recently turned 10. At the age of 7, when he was still wetting each night and occasionally having the odd 'accident' during the day (the 'patch'!), we were referred to a local pediatrician.
With a family history of bedwetting on both sides, one of our boys was most likely to have some problems, from what I have been told. After 5 months of appointments and bedwetting alarms, he was finally dry every night! What a great sense of satisfaction, as well as relief.
However about 3 months later, we went off for a 2 week overseas trip together and the bedwetting started again. At first we thought it was due to the change in routine. The wetting continued at least 5 nights a week and continued to do so for another 12 months.
We decided that nature seemed to NOT be taking her course in this case, and again were referred to a pediatric continence clinic. Meetings varied from weekly to monthly, and over the past 12 months we have tried 2 different bed alarms, Minirin tablets and sprays. Results were too random to establish a meaningful pattern and our lovely now 10 year old boy, who has remained so patient, continues to wet the bed each night.
With school camp and sleepovers looming, thank goodness for DryNites!!! We have gone back to using the bedwetting pants as a wet bed each morning was becoming a little much for us all!!
We have now been referred to an endocrinologist due to other weight related issues, and are now seeing a chiropractor who also practices NET (neuro emotional technique). This latest 'pursuit' is so informative and is helping us to look at a somewhat alternative option. We are looking at past emotional triggers which may in fact be 'blocking' the messages to the brain which say, 'Wake up, you need to go to the toilet!'
The chiropractic manipulation serves to release pressure on the nerves which are related to this as well. I would encourage any parent who experiences 'challenges' such as what I have described, to keep going and seek help wherever you can. Our son is not yet dry each night but the journey has certainly taught us so much about the complexities of our body that we would otherwise never have known. I am happy to provide updates on our progress over the coming months. In the meantime, thankfully there's DryNites!
