My daughter occasionally wets the bed at night, but the main problem is she has a really bad habit of "holding on" and then has accident(s) because she can't get to the toilet quick enough. We ask her constantly if she needs to go to toilet but she won't even though she holds herself like she's desperate. She also says she has a sore "wee-wee" on a regular basis and more often than not it is red and sometimes inflamed. Hoping you have some advice to help us get her out of this bad habit!

firstly, let me say that she is still very young so I wouldn’t be concerned about the occasional wet bed – this is something that will come to an end. Secondly, daytime accidents are very common among 2- and 3-year-olds with so much going on in their little lives going to the toilet does not rank high in their priorities! This happened for a period of time with my eldest child who would be so engrossed in play that she would refuse to stop and go to the toilet. The best thing you can do is to remind her that whatever she is doing will still be there when she returns – you can help her to be conscious of signs that she needs to go by keeping a look out for those behavioural indicators like holding herself and dancing around. You may need to revisit some of those strategies that you used when you first started toilet training her – we started using a sticker chart again which worked a treat! Sometimes daytime accidents can be caused by medical problems – make sure that she is drinking enough water throughout the day as this may be causing the redness – if she complains of a burning sensation when she urinates or there is strong odour then you need to follow this up with your GP.
