My daughter has just turned 5. Has been dry overnight since 2.5, waking to wee if needed during the night. These last few days has wet the bed each night for about seven/ten nights in a row. First year at preschool and this is our holiday period. Could she just be exhausted?
Secondary bedwetting can result from a number of factors and overtiredness can certainly be a contributing factor. I remember my second eldest child falling asleep at the dinner table during his first month of preschool! It is not unusual for children when they are overtired, or even during these colder winter months, to sleep more soundly making it more difficult for them to wake in response to a full bladder. In saying this, it is always important to have children checked by their GP when they experience a return to bedwetting after an extended period of nighttime continence. While medical causes such as urinary tract infection or juvenile diabetes are rare it is always important to rule these out. You can try and reduce her nighttime wetting by shifting her bedtime forward a little, making sure she has easy access to the toilet at night, and avoiding drinks high in sugar and caffeine, as these tend to stimulate the kidneys into producing more urine than normal. Have a chat with her as well to make sure that nothing is bothering her and that she is not too scared to get-up at night to use the toilet – your solution may be something as simple as a nightlight! All the best!
