My daughter gets frequent urinary tract infections. Can this be related to her bedwetting or just a symptom? Also she frequently wets her pants during the day and I think it is just laziness. Can being lazy about going to the toilet cause the UTI's? The doctor said that she will just grow out of getting the infections but she gets one every month. Is this normal?
Urinary tract infections are a known cause of both daytime and nighttime incontinence. It is unusual for 5-year-old children to wet during the day out of laziness although it is quite common for children to experience accidents when they are distracted or consumed by play. This can even occur once they start school. I’ve often walked through a preschool classroom and watched children jiggling from one foot to another while completing a puzzle or playing with a friend – going to the toilet means stopping something they are enjoying and frankly it’s less appealing. If this sounds like your daughter you can help her by explaining that whatever she is doing will still be there when she gets back and it will take a lot longer if she wets herself as she would need to go and change. When you are with her keep a look out for behavioural cues (e.g., holding herself, jumping around) that indicate she needs to go to the toilet – help her to identify these by pointing them out. Persistent UTI’s should be followed up with a GP if concerned you should ask for a referral to a pediatrician.
