We have had the odd accident in the past, but not sure why this would be happening now. My husband and I have never made a deal of it and it is not an issue for us, however we are getting concerned there may be an issue. She has had a bit change going on, big school next year, last week of preschool, dancing concert etc. We have being busy. Can you offer any advice? She is also concerned and doesn't know why she is not waking up. This morning she said "mummy I'm not being lazy".
It can be incredibly upsetting for children when they start wetting the bed again after being dry for an extended period. Firstly, you need to reassure her that you understand that this is in no way her fault – your support and understanding at this time is what is paramount. Secondary bedwetting has two main causes: medical and psychological. Medical causes are rare but may include such things as juvenile diabetes, tapeworm, constipation and urinary tract infections – so it is essential that you have these ruled out first. Stress can also be associated with secondary bedwetting. The common causes of stress among preschoolers are such things as starting school or significant changes such as parental separation or the birth of a sibling. If you think this may be a contributing factor then you need to look at trying to simply her life, children take great comfort from the familiar so try and minimize changes in her life and continue to reassure her of your love. It would also be worth shifting her bedtime forward an hour as overtiredness could be a contributing factor, particularly given all the activities she is currently involved in. Hopefully with these small changes she will be dry again in no time!
