Our daughter who is turning 6 was fully toilet trained at around 3 years old. She didn't have any accidents until recently when she had a urine infection and since then has continued to wet the bed every night. This all coincided with her starting schoo

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi Jodie, as I am sure you are aware, it is not uncommon for a child to return to nighttime wetting upon starting school – this can be due to stress or overtiredness. Starting school can place lots of demands on children; there are new routines to get used to, busier days, new friends and new teachers. If this is a contributing factor, her nighttime wetting should subside, as she becomes more comfortable with the demands of her new school life. In saying this, it is also highly possible that her nighttime wetting has more to do with the fact that she contracted a urinary tract infection. Given she is still wetting at night it would certainly be worthwhile just having her tested just to make sure nothing is lingering. In the meantime it is perfectly fine to use the DryNites, waking her at night is not really helpful as it can result in a disrupted night sleep and does very little to help her bladder learn to hold the urine overnight. Make sure she drinks plenty of water throughout the day and change her DryNites as soon as she wakes in the morning to avoid infection.

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
