Hi Ang, It can be incredibly frustrating and at times overwhelming when your child continues to wet the bed night. Firstly, let me reassure you that you are not alone – with about 1 in 7 children wetting the bed by age 5. It is not generally recommended that you commence treatment before the age of 6 or 7 years, due the high spontaneous cure rate up until then, however given her obvious distress I would certainly look into introducing treatment sooner. I generally advise against restricting drinks completely although you can reduce the amount she drinks after dinner as well as making sure she doesn’t consume sweetened or caffeinated drinks throughout the day. You can help build her self-confidence by pointing out all those things in his life that he is good at, while reassuring him this is not something that he has a lot of control over. With respect to using DryNites– point out to her that these are designed for girls up to age 15, it is important that she doesn’t feel that bedwetting is something only babies or toddlers do as this will only add to her sense of embarrassment.

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
