I have a 4yo girl, and her urine has quite a potent smell. Could this be a UTI?

i have a 4yr old girl who has started bedwetting over the last few months, along with this, she also wets her pants anywhere up to 5 times a day.
she has been toilet trained since the age of 2yrs. Her urine sometimes has quite a potent smell to it, could this be a UTI? or could it be more of a case of "shes too busy to use the toilet"? also, if it is a UTI, what can i give as treatment??

Dr Cathrine Answered:

The first course of action when children start wetting the bed at night or experience incontinence during the day after a period of dryness is to take them to see a GP so that tests can be run to see if there is an underlying medical cause. While some children do wet their pants during the day because they are distracted or busy playing – this would not be the cause of her nighttime wetting nor does it account for the associated odour. UTI’s a more common among girls than boys and are often the cause of secondary nocturnal enuresis and daytime incontinence – your doctor will be able to advise on the best course of treatment and will discuss ways of preventing its reoccurrence.
