I have a daughter who is 4 1/2yo and still wetting. Is there anything I should be concerned about?

I have a daughter who is 4 1/2yrs old and days that she has a nap in the afternoon she wets herself. I and my relatives now when she is napping we need to have a waterproof protector underneath her. She also holds herself quite often and will say to me that she doesn't need to go but sure enough something does happen. Kindy is also changing her clothes as she has been going all this year, she holds herself alot. Is there anything I should be concerned about? She knows how to go and does at home but elsewhere she wants someone to go with her.

Dr Cathrine Answered:

it is important that you first address her daytime incontinence before worrying about her bedwetting. It is quite common for children to experience the occasional accident during the day for a couple of years after being toilet trained. Young children are easily distracted and can find it difficult to tear themselves away from an engaging game which is why they often leave it too late to get to the toilet in time. There is so much going on in the preschool environment which is why accidents are more common at preschool than at home. When children experience daytime incontinence after 4 years of age on a more regular basis (as is the case with your daughter) you need to consult with a GP to check if there is an underlying medical condition – often there isn’t but it is important to rule this out first. Talk to her about how she feels when she needs to go to the toilet – helping her to identify those early cues so that she doesn’t leave it until the last minute to go. Ask her preschool teachers to keep an eye out to see if anything is bothering her at kindy – is she afraid to use the toilets? Are other children teasing her? Talking to her about this may uncover fears or anxieties that may be causing her to wet her pants while there. I would try putting her in DryNites for her daytime naps just until she stops wetting the bed – make sure she goes to the toilet before her nap and that she doesn’t consume fizzy or sugary drinks as this will increase the amount of urine produced by her kidneys. You could also try moving her nap time forward a little so that she is not too overtired when she goes down.
