My daughter is 6 years old (dob 22/3/02). Before she turned 6 she went for months with only having 1 or 2 wet nights a week, then all of a sudden she's gone back to wetting the bed nearly everynight. It's now been happening for about 7 months. I have star chart so that every 5 nights of being dry she gets a present. Is there anything else I can do, and do those pants make it better or teach the child that they can just wet the bed?
It is not unusual for children to experience cycles of dryness followed by a period of wet nights as they move toward permanent nighttime continence. If you’re concerned about the increased frequency of her wetting I would recommend that you speak with your GP just to rule out any underlying medical cause. Unfortunately rewards are not particularly successful in the treatment of bedwetting mostly due to the fact that the bedwetting is beyond your daughter’s control. Failure to achieve goals may impact negatively on her self-esteem so if you do want to continue using reward charts only reward those behaviours that she can directly control – like drinking properly throughout the day or helping you strip her bed when she has wet. While there has been some debate about the wearing of absorbent pants at night, the research to date suggests that their use neither speeds up nor prolongs the process. You will find that most girls your daughters age are interested in becoming dry at night – so it is highly unlikely that she would see this as a ‘green light’ to continue wetting.
