Hi Daphne – it is not unusual for children to experience some regression in their toileting skills at times of stress and certainly the pending birth of a sibling has the potential to cause stress and uncertainty among young children. If you are at all concerned that this may be contributing to her behaviour, reassure her how much she is loved and what an important part of your family she is (and will continue to be after the birth). Continue to involve her in the preparations; after the birth allow for one-on-one time where she does not have to share your attention with the baby. When children experience a return to daytime wetting after a period of continence it is always wise to have them checked by your GP just to rule out any underlying medical cause. In the meantime you can help her by making sure she is drinking sufficient water at regular intervals throughout the day. Many children who wet during the day do so because they have overactive bladders. Not drinking enough fluid and drinking caffeine-containing drinks can worsen overactive bladders and contribute toward daytime wetting. Low levels of fluid intake can also result in constipation, contributing to daytime accidents. If you do decide to re-introduce absorbent pants during the day be aware that this will in no way help her to stop, they will however reduce any embarrassment associated with wetting as well as the potential for teasing from her peers.

Dr Cathrine
