My daughter is 5 next month and as well as bed wetting is starting to wet herself during the day. Any ideas?

My daughter is 5 next month and is still wearing drynites at night (still very wet in the morning) but now has started weeing herself during the day as well. I am running out of ideas on how to get her back into using the toilet!! Any ideas?

The ability to control the bladder at night is usually achieved after your child learns to stay dry during the day. Incontinence happens when the control mechanism of the urinary system fails for some reason. There seems to be two common reasons why children wet during the day. Firstly, some children experience difficulty controlling the urge to wee. Secondly, they consciously delay going to the toilet until they lose control and wet themselves. They are often too involved in playing a game or fear missing out on something exciting. If you think the later is the case then you need to reassure her that everything will still be there when she gets back or start reminding her again that she should use the toilet – you could reintroduce a reward system for each time she stops what she’s doing and goes to the toilet. You do not mention in your question how long your daughter has been day trained for. When children begin to wet themselves again after a period of dryness I always recommend to parents that they make an appointment with their GP to rule out any underlying medical cause such as a urinary tract infection or other bladder problems. With regards to her bedwetting – bedwetting is considered normal up until the age of 5 so I wouldn’t be overly concerned at the moment. It’s important to focus on helping her to stay dry during the day first – then dry nights will hopefully follow.
