How do I handle a 5 1/2 yr old girl who wets the bed every night.

My 5 1/2 year old girl (who is at school), wets the bed every night. I have tried restricted fluids with no effect. I toilet her before bed and often will wake her before I go to bed to toilet again. I stoppped
using dry nites some time again feeling she was using them as a comfort measure as she would always go straight for them after a shower. The last few weeks have also seen her having quite a few bowel movement accidents in her undies before making it to the toilet to finish off. I don't know how to handle the situation any more, and am getting desperately concerned about the long term impact on her and her self esteem. Is it time to visit the GP and make some further investigations??

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Chronic constipation is a common but often unrecognised cause of nighttime wetting. Along with nocturnal enuresis, other signs of constipation include irregular bowel movements as well as daytime soiling or overflow. Given your description I would strongly recommend that you make an appointment with your GP so that they can run some tests to see if there is an underlying medical condition. The good news is that if once children are treated for their constipation and they develop regular bowel habits most will stop wetting the bed. In the meantime I would reintroduce the DryNites, while they certainly may be providing the added comfort and security she needs, they are unlikely to be contributing to her bedwetting.
