Hi Dr Catherine, My daughter is nearly 9 & had stage 3 kidney reflux at 7mths. She still wet's the bed now & then. Can you please help?

My daughter had kidney reflux at 7 mths old and has now out grown the reflux, but still wets the bed now and then. I wake her up at night to take her to the toilet and that works sometimes. Lara will go a couple of weeks with all night's dry but then can change and wet 2-3 night's in a row. I have tried reward chart's but it doesn't work. I'm just stuck on what else to do. Can you please help?

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi K. C. – your daughter has very little control over her bladder while asleep, so while rewards can be very motivating during the day, they will do little to control her wetting at night and may in fact make her feel like she has somehow failed when she is unable to wake-up dry. Rewards or incentives can certainly be used to encourage positive behaviours such as going to the toilet just before bedtime, maintaining a healthy diet or drinking good amounts of water regularly throughout the day. If you have not already used a conditioning alarm this may be an ideal time to introduce it. This form of treatment is typically more successful among children who experience less frequent wetting like your daughter. I would recommend that you speak with your GP or pediatrician before introducing this.

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
