Is my 4 yr old daughter starting to train herself during the night?

Up until a few months ago my 4yr daughter was dry each morning. Her drynite is now soaked in the mornings. A few weeks ago she has started taking her drynite off when she wets it during the night. Is she starting to train herself?

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Unfortunately nighttime continence does not work in the same way as daytime training – nighttime wetting typically happens when children are asleep and are not in conscious control over their bladder, making it more difficult to train a child to become dry at night. The most common cause of nighttime wetting is a neurological-developmental delay. Young children whose nervous systems are still forming may not be able to know when their bladder is full. Consequently, they do not wake up in time to go to the toilet. The fact that she wakes-up after she wets means that her body is starting to respond to the sensation of needing to go. Time and lots of patience are the best ways to manage bedwetting among young children, remembering that most children stop wetting the bed by the time they turn 6 years of age. Until then I would continue using the DryNites, you can certainly encourage her positive approach by rewarding her each time she removes her wet DryNite and puts it in the bin.
