I have had to put her back into dry nights which is gutting for her and us but I just can not keep washing bedding everytime (especially in winter) as she somehow manages to wet her top sheet soaking thru to the duvet as well as the bottom sheet. I would be grateful for any advice you have for us.
It can be incredibly frustrating for both parents and children when your child returns to wetting following a significant period of nighttime continence. There are both physical and psychological reasons underlying secondary wetting (this describes the condition where children return to wetting following at least 6 months of dryness), so it is important that you first rule out any possible medical cause. The majority of secondary bedwetting results from emotional problems. The three most common psychological stressors for children include the birth of a sibling, hospitalisation and starting school, although other situations such as peer relationship difficulties, bullying, or parental divorce or separation can also cause anxiety in children. Talk to your child to see if there is anything bothering her. If stress is the cause, once the stressful situation has been resolved, children’s bedwetting usually stops. In the meantime reassure your daughter that none of this is her fault, promoting self-confidence and positive self-esteem is particularly important at this time.

Dr Cathrine
