My daughter is almost 4 and has not yet been successful in night-time toilet training. She wets through pull-ups and I have had to go back to nappies, which she has almost grown out of. How can I help her?

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi Rachael, it is perfectly normal for your daughter to still be wetting the bed at night with many children continuing to do so right up to school age. The reason she is wetting through her Pull-Ups is because they are specifically designed for helping children through the toilet training process and therefore offer lower levels of absorbency than nappies or DryNites. If the nappies no longer fit then it is time for her to graduate into DryNites, she is likely to prefer these, as they are designed to appeal to older children, looking more like an underpant. The majority of children your daughter’s age will outgrow bedwetting on their own. You can help her to develop healthy bladder habits by encouraging her to drink water regularly throughout the day, make sure she empties her bladder fully before going to bed and avoid food and drinks that include caffeine as these tend to stimulate the kidneys to produce larger amounts of urine than normal. All the best!

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
