Grandmother dying has retriggered wet nights.

We thought we had finished with over night bed wetting, then my mum passed away a little over two years ago. This seemed to retrigger. At the time she was only wetting probably once a fornight now we are lucky if we are dry once a month. It seems to be more frequent when its winter, and improves slightly in summer. We have tried taking her to the toilet again when we go to bed that works for about a week and we are again wet in the morning.
She is now 6 and a half should we be seeking assistance elsewhere? Our son who is 4 has never wet overnight since being dry by day. This dose cause her some concern.

Hi – this must be very frustrating for both you and your daughter. It is not unusual for a stressful event such as the death of loved one to cause a return to bedwetting – particularly for children who have taken longer to achieve night time dryness. The fact that she has continued to wet the bed for over two years suggest that something else other than the emotional distress of her grandmother dying may be causing her bedwetting. I would recommend that you make an appointment with your GP to firstly rule out any underlying medical cause such as constipation or an infection, and secondly, to explore different treatment options. The night time alarm system is probably the best approach currently available – but is does require a great deal of commitment from both you and your daughter. You can prepare for your appointment by keeping a journal of her days, how much she drinks, what she eats, her activities as well as how much she wets and the frequency of wetting. In the meantime it is important that you reassure her that none of this is her fault and it is something that she has no control over. She will be particularly sensitive to her bedwetting given her younger brother is dry at night. Work on boosting her self-confidence by highlighting all the things she is good at – praise and support are wonderful ways to protect children against threats to their self-esteem.
