My daughter is four and a half years old and needs to wear pullups to bed every night. The pullups are usually very full every morning and it is extrememly rare that they are dry. We are also having problems with her letting out a small amount of wee in her underwear during the day (multiple times), usually just enough to wet her undies but sometimes a full wee. We have had her checked twice now by doctors and they cant find anything wrong. She is also a very hyperactive and 'full on' child. Is it too early to intervene or should be start looking at bed wetting alarms? She is due to start school in three months and we are particualarly concerned about her wetting during the day.
Hi Melissa – There are a number of reasons why children experience daytime accidents. The most common reason is that they have overactive bladders, with less common causes including emotional stress or urinary tract infections. Seeing these have already been ruled out by your GP we need to think about other possible reasons. Sometimes little accidents occur simply because children leave it too late to go to the toilet. Remind her to go to the toilet regularly (aim for 5-7 times a day), and not to hold on for too long if she experiences the urge to go. Help her to identify those common signals indicating she needs to empty her bladder. These are often ignored by children, particularly when there are so many other wonderful and exciting things to do in their day. I would not be overly concerned with her nighttime wetting at this early stage. While you could certainly try an alarm, the chances of success are highly dependent on how motivated your daughter is to become dry. Typically younger children show less of a desire and therefore experience more difficulties following the requirements of the alarm. In the meantime you might like to try DryNites rather than the Pull-Ups, these are better suited to older children and are much more absorbent which reduces the chance of leakage.

Dr Cathrine
