4 year old daughter has milk before bed and then wets the bed. Should I stop with the milk?

My daughter will be 4 in Feb 09...she wets the bed every night...she just is a heavy sleeper i think..and also LOVES her milk before bed..whcih i try to give early but she still has a 'drop' more just before bed...should i be waking her before i go to bed to go to toilet?

you would find most children your daughter’s age would still be wetting the bed at night with many professionals not even viewing nighttime wetting as an incontinence issue until children have reached age 5. I would definitely not wake her to go to the toilet – this will only result in a broken night sleep and will not teach her to become dry on her own. I’m sure you’re aware that the bottle of milk she is having before going to sleep is serving her need for comfort (rather than sustenance) – in much the same way as many toddlers still have a dummy for bed. There’s lots of different views as to what age we should stop letting children have a bottle before bed – I’m always of the view that different things work for different families – I will say however that when it comes to bedwetting you really need to think about not offering her too much to drink before bedtime and possibly only offering her water if she is thirsty as some liquids can actually cause the kidneys to produce more urine putting added pressure on children’s bladders.
